LAPWORTH CRICKET CLUB FUN DAY – Sunday July 4th 2010

The third annual Lapworth Fun Day was held on Sunday 4th July a week earlier than in previous years in order that we would all be able to watch England win the World Cup on the following Sunday!

Our predication with regards to the football was not so good however we were able to organise and enjoy another really successful day at the Melson Memorial Park with a large crowd turning up to enjoy the many pitchside attractions provided by the various Lapworth groups and organisations as well as watch the Aston Villa footballing stars of yesteryear perform on the cricket field.

As for the game itself – Neil Rioch the Aston Villa Old Stars Captain won the toss and elected to field in this 30 overs aside contest.

The Villa bowlers made little impact on a flat Lapworth wicket and with a lightening fast outfield runs came quickly. The Lapworth quartet of Malcolm Paulson 51, Sean Cross 45, Ben Wright 44 and Dave Pugh 34 took the home side to 256 in their allotted overs.

The Villa Old Stars also started their response at a very brisk pace with runs again flowing, Villa guest player Jones top scoring with 51 however they eventually fell behind the run rate and finished on 214. Lapworth being  victorious by 42 runs.

Neil Rioch and a number the Villa Old Stars stated how much they had enjoyed the day and looked forward to returning in the future. Spectators were kept fully informed during the match by our announcer Ian Winter of BBC Midlands Today.

Unfortunately during the Villa’s innings the game was marred by an injury to one of the umpires Eric Wingrove, who was struck fully in the face by the ball. I am delighted to advise that Eric is now well on the road to recovery however he is certainly no prettier!

Lapworth Cricket Club would like to thank all of the Lapworth Groups and Organisations for their continued support say a big thank you to our sponsors and of course an even bigger thank you to all of our visitors for turning up in such numbers and making it such an enjoyable day.

A donation from the proceeds of the event will be made to the 2010 Charity Lapworth First Responders.

A big thank you also to all our sponsors of the day.
